Ron Hubbard]]. Hubbard stellte seine "emotional tone scale" erstmals 1951 in seinem Werk "Science of Survival" vor.
Die "tone scale" wird von Scientologen zu einer eigentümlichen Charakterisierung von Personen eingesetzt, etwa beim so genannten ''autiting''. Allgemein soll der gefundene Zahlwert etwa zur [[Spiritualität]] aussagen, bzw wie "lebhaft" oder "tot" jemand sei.

Die tone scale ist in 80 Zahlenwerte unterteilt. Der Zahlenumfang geht von -40 (Totalversager mit Interesse für Tod und Zerstörung) bis +40 (Maximalwert für kreative und glückliche Menschen).
Allgemein ordnen sich praktizierende Scientologen automatisch in die oberen Bereiche der Skala ein, und das Scientology-auditing soll den Wert anheben können.
