Er studierte Medizin an der University of Oregon in Portland und spezialisierte sich als Radiologe. Er arbeitete danach als Radiologe und Strahlentherapeut auf der Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield (Kalifornien) und gründete in den siebziger Jahren in Fort Worth (Texas) ein Krebsberatungszentrum.
