Urinary porphyrins and transsulfuration metabolites in participants diagnosed with anASD were examined. A prospective, blinded study was undertaken to evaluate a cohort of 28 participantswith an ASD diagnosis for Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) scores, urinary porphyrins, andtranssulfuration metabolites. Testing was conducted using Vitamin Diagnostics, Inc. (CLIA-approved) and Laboratoire Philippe Auguste (ISO-approved). Participants with severe ASDs had significantly increasedmercury intoxication-associated urinary porphyrins (pentacarboxyporphyrin, precoproporphyrin, andcoproporphyrin) in comparison to participants with mild ASDs, whereas other urinary porphyrins weresimilar in both groups. Significantly decreased plasma levels of reduced glutathione (GSH), cysteine, andsulfate were observed among study participants relative to controls. In contrast, study participants hadsignificantly increased plasma oxidized glutathione (GSSG) relative to controls. Mercury intoxication-associated urinary porphyrins were significantly correlated with increasing CARS scores and GSSG levels,whereas other urinary porphyrins did not show these relationships. The urinary porphyrin and CARS scorecorrelations observed among study participants suggest that mercury intoxication is significantly associatedwith autistic symptoms. Robert Nataf est un médecin biologiste directeur et fondateur du Laboratoire Philippe Auguste à Paris, connu pour son étude controversée (publiée le 15 juillet 2006 dans la revue Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology) proposant une association entre l'autisme infantile et les toxines environnementales, en particulier le mercure.[2][3][4]. Nataf avait à l'origine dit aux parents qu'il avait une publication dans la revue The Lancet Neurology, mais les éditeurs du Lancet ont nié l'existence d'un tel document, et Nataf a refusé de clarifier la situation lorsqu'on lui a demandé de commenter[5]. Nataf a avancé l'idée que la toxicité du mercure peut être une cause de l'autisme à diverses conférences, comme au États-Unis sur l'autisme et à la conférence annuelle d'Asperger Association[6]. Il a aussi mené d'autres recherches avec Mark Geier[7] et sur le lien potentiel entre la toxicité du mercure et l'autisme, tel qu'il se manifeste à divers dans certaines porphyrines urinaires.[8]. Cependant, Kevin Leitch du blog LeftBrainRightBrain[9] a remis en cause la recherche de Nataf, arguant que les niveaux de précoproporphyrine n'étaient pas, comme Nataf l'avait avancé dans son article de 2006, nécessairement indicatif de la toxicité du mercure[10]. D'autres critiques ont noté que Laboratoire Philippe Auguste vend des tests de porphyrine et que Nataf peut donc avoir un conflit d'intérêts[5] [11].

Formation

Robert Nataf a obtenu son doctorat en médecine de l'Université de Paris VII (Paris Diderot) et a reçu les certifications en bactériologie clinique et virologie, en immunologie générale, en hématologie et en biochimie clinique[12].
